The Blind Side - Sandra Bullock deserves all of the awards she won for this film.
I’d forgotten what a great film this is and felt the need to write a post on it!
The Blind Side is a fantastic film from beginning to end and showcases the lovely Sandra Bullock at her best. Her performance is so strong and believable which makes the story much more intense and gripping for the audience. I admire how her character, Leigh Anne Tuohy, takes Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron), a homeless young boy, under her wing and nurtures him like one of her own. I find the relationship between the two compelling and it encourages a more diverse community of which has been unwelcomed in the past. This film reminds us, as an audience, the harsh reality of some people’s lives. We are often oblivious to people who live outside of our own social class due to area in which we live ourselves. This film shows specifically what it can be like when people from different classes combine. Michael attends a middle-higher class high school, a place in which he feels he doesn’t belong. The children laugh at him and avoid him because they perceive him as ‘different’ and because of this they think he’s scary and unapproachable. The students among the higher class are typically stereotyped and are represented as snobby and spoilt, who take no care or consideration of the boy who is just trying to fit in and outcast him in a way he doesn’t deserve.
Despite Michael lacking a basic education and communicational skills; he scores highly in protective instincts due to the rough upbringing he had. He is unfamiliar as to who his father is and his mother is a drug addict, he also grew up in a location filled with crime, making it inevitable for Michael to be protective of himself and remaining family. The film reinstates the true values of family and how important they really are, it also shows how you don’t need to be blood to be family. Michael’s protective instincts benefit him when trying out for a place on the football team at his high school. The sport gives him a sense of belonging and through a little bit of practice, Michael becomes a great player which opens up a range of opportunities for him.
It doesn’t matter what background you’re from, what race you are or what ability of intelligence you are at; with motivation and courage you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
